What can we do as individuals to help the industry become more diverse?
As key influencers in our respective businesses we need to acknowledge that great ideas and the decisions needed to drive them forward require multiple, diverse viewpoints. If businesses only recruit from the same narrow groups they’ll end up with more of the same and ultimately fall behind their competitors. Some recent research showed that the most diverse teams made better decisions about 90 per cent of the time. That’s pretty compelling evidence. We also need to look at what drives behaviours and the informal cultures that exist in businesses. There’s no point in recruiting a more diverse workforce if culture drives them out.
What is the one thing you would do to encourage more women into the IT sector?
Show them the wealth of opportunities available and that people like them can succeed. I’m not a fan of recruitment quotas or such, but if women don’t see other people that they can identify with within the workforce of an industry or business, they tend to look elsewhere. As tech becomes more embedded in people’s everyday lives, the industry needs to successfully reflect the customers it serves.
What are your three top tips for women looking to start a career in IT?
1. Be thorough in your approach by making sure you ask questions when you don’t understand.
2. Be prepared to be judged on what you deliver.
3. Don’t be afraid to highlight the work you’re doing.
Why do you support CRN’s Women in Channel campaign?
At Sigma, we have a very diverse workforce with women being a key part of our team so I know first-hand that women have a lot to offer the UK channel. The current under representation of women in our industry limits the role models available for the next generation.
