New Features

New in InstallAnywhere 2010

Supports the Latest Platforms

Enable users to reliably install your application on the latest operating systems, including:

  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • SUSE Linux 11.2
  • Ubuntu 9.10
  • Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

New Maintenance Mode

The new 'Maintenance Mode' installation option enables your application's users to add or remove features from installed products and repair broken or corrupted features - across all supported platforms.

New Rollback Capabilities

In the event of an error during installation or if the user cancels the setup, you can use the new rollback feature to return the system to its original pre-installation state. This removes any temporary or half-installed files and thus avoids incomplete or corrupted product installation.

New Uninstall Options

The new uninstall task in the advanced designer makes it easy to modify uninstallation actions - control the sequencing of actions, remove and change them or add additional actions to be performed during the uninstallation process.

Control when files and folders are deleted, registry key changes reversed, shortcuts deleted and when custom code is executed, amongst other actions.

New Instance Control Capabilities

Set a limit on how many instances of your application users can install. No need to write custom code to detect application installation instances.

New Configuration Options

The new ‘Build Configuration’ feature enables creation of multiple installation configurations contained within one InstallAnywhere project file. For example, create separate configuration files for each edition of your application and deploy the configuration settings in one installation.

New in InstallAnywhere 2009

Better Target Java Runtime Environments

InstallAnywhere saves you time and effort by using a new search algorithm to automatically determine if a specific Java Runtime Environment is already installed on a target machine. You can also customise your installer to use the first Java Virtual Machine (JVM) it locates on a system, conduct a JVM search based on a property file, give the end user the option of specifying the JVM to use, and more.

Payload Optimisation Improvements

In a new approach to handling duplicate files, InstallAnywhere now detects source duplication at a file level and only bundles one copy of the source. By bundling only one copy, InstallAnywhere significantly reduces the footprint of your installations, and that cuts download time for end users as well as CD/DVD costs for larger installations.

More Customised End-User Panels

InstallAnywhere now includes the ability to change the position, font, and color settings for labels and fields in end-user installation panels. It gives you even tighter customisation control over the look and feel of your installations, so they can better meet your end users’ needs and your company’s brand requirements.

New and Expanded APIs

InstallAnywhere gives you even more flexibility in designing installations with new and expanded APIs. A new project automation API gives you the power to define, edit, or build a project via a Java API. Also, a new product registry API improves runtime automation possibilities by retrieving detailed product information such as version, date installed, and product components. And a new built-in panel API exposes installer UI controls such as buttons, choice groups, choosers, labels, and text fields for more extensibility.

Install Phase Action Group

InstallAnywhere has a new action group during the install phase that saves you time and effort. It can apply rules to a group of actions instead of just individual actions, eliminating manual steps during installation authoring.

Expanded Localisation Support

You can now use InstallAnywhere to customise your installer’s splash screen with a title, an image, instructions, or other information. It gives your greater customisation control for your localised installations. Your installer can automatically select each end user’s native language based on their system settings or a command-line action, providing a higher-quality, localised installation experience.

Benefits

One Project, Every Platform

InstallAnywhere lets you build a single project that can create installations that successfully install your software on all the platforms (and in the languages) you target. All you do is select the platforms you want, and InstallAnywhere does the rest.

You Don’t Have to Be an Expert on Every Platform

Platforms like Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, Linux, i5/OS, Mac OS X, and Windows each have their own complex installation requirements. With InstallAnywhere, you don’t have to learn any of them. It handles all the requirements for you.

Get Products to Market Faster

InstallAnywhere includes automated tools and wizard-driven development that save you significant time, speeding you through the installation authoring process, so you can bring your software to market faster.

Provide a Favorable Installation Experience

Installation is your customers’ first impression of your product. Make it a great one with InstallAnywhere. You can use custom graphics, animation, and transparent images to create an installation experience that matches your software’s branding.

Reduce Support Costs

InstallAnywhere helps keep costs down during and after development. In addition to simplifying documentation and accelerating the QA process, InstallAnywhere reduces your support costs by helping eliminate end-user installation problems.

Multilingual Support for a Global Market

Software is a global business, and InstallAnywhere’s language support makes it easy for you to target customers around the world. First, the InstallAnywhere IDE is localised into English, German, French, or Japanese, so setup authors can interact with InstallAnywhere in their native language. Second, InstallAnywhere lets you build one installation that can present text in up to 31 languages, depending on the target system’s native language.
