New in Delphi Prism XE

New name, new functionality

The latest release of Delphi Prism is called Delphi Prism XE and signifies the product is available with Embarcadero ToolCloud technology for simplified network licensing. It also provides access to earlier versions of Delphi Prism including 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Subversion integration

New support for Subversion, the powerful source control system, helps you to perform common Subversion commands directly from within the IDE.

MonoDevelop integration

MonoDevelop is a free, open source and feature rich IDE for Windows and Mac. With the inclusion of MonoDevelop in Delphi Prism XE, you can now develop on Mac as well as Windows. Additionally new project templates are included specifically for Mac OS X to ensure you are using the Mono libraries.

Visual Studio 2010 Shell

Delphi Prism XE now comes with the Visual Studio 2010 Shell IDE which can be used if you do not own Visual Studio. New features in this IDE are improved monitor support, an enhanced code editor, improved debugging and easy access to the latest .NET functionality.

Supports .NET 4.0 and Silverlight 4.0

Develop using the latest Microsoft technologies - .NET 4.0 and Silverlight 4.0. Improvements include better native/managed interoperability, threading improvements, enhanced garbage collection and more.

New compiler features

Among the major new features to the compiler are:

• New expressions include 'for' loop expressions (loop based on an expression), 'if' expressions (for simple inline conditional expressions) and 'case' expressions (for larger conditional expressions)
• Support for .NET 4.0 BigInteger constants - for arbitrary length signed integers
• Support for .NET 4.0 Dynamic Types - ideal for working with dynamic languages
• Support for 'begin/end' assembly entry points

Additional new language features include support for new 'readonly' local variables, .NET 4.0 turples, .NET 4.0 PIA import support, .NET 4.0 tail calls, partial interfaces and more.

Automatically convert C# code

Paste or import C# code snippets or .cs files into Delphi Prism XE and they get automatically converted into Delphi Prism XE code.

iPhone support

Delphi Prism XE works with MonoTouch from Novell to produce applications for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Code obfuscation capabilities

A free licence of REMObjects Oxfuscator is included to obfuscate your code and discourage reverse engineering. Easily run the obfuscation routines standalone or include them in your build process.

Free licence of Raize CodeSite

A free licence of Raize CodeSite Logging System is included to enable developers to conduct local or remote logging of an application and send logging data to either a live display or a log file.

Licensing

What are the different types of licences available?

A named user licence is for one individual and the named user is the only person permitted to use the product. There is no requirement to have a licence server. A network named user requires a licence server and enhances licence manageability when you have multiple users.

A concurrent user licence allows multiple individuals to use the product, but only up to the number of concurrent licenses purchased. Once that limit is exceeded, anyone else trying to access the software is denied access. Concurrent licences require a licence server - you can use either ToolCloud or FLEXnet.

What is ESD, ToolCloud and Flex?

ESD licences ('Electronic Software Download') provide you with an electronic download of the product(s) purchased. These are typically the most common type of licenses purchased.

ToolCloud and FLEX licences are used when you wish to manage your licences over a network. They help maintain a list of named users/concurrent users who can use the product.

What is Support and Maintenance?

Support and Maintenance can be purchased at the time you purchase your product or upgrade. The support and maintenance agreement gives you a year of upgrades (including major and minor upgrades) and a specified number of support incidents.

What are the limitations of the Academic products?

The Academic edition can be used only for learning in an academic or classroom environment. Educational institutions cannot use the academic version to produce software for use within their institution. Additionally most academic products are not eligible for upgrades.

RAD Studio XE is available in 3 separate editions:

RAD Studio Professional

RAD Studio XE Professional can create native Windows executables and touch screen applications using C++Builder XE, Delphi XE and Delphi Prism XE. RAD Studio XE Professional supports:

• Local database support for Interbase and MySQL in both Delphi and C++Builder
• Database connectivity for Delphi Prism XE available via ADO.NET
• Supports VCL for the Web with a limit of 5 connections
• Visually represent code with UML code visualisation
• Basic set of code audits to understand code and project health

RAD Studio XE Enterprise

RAD Studio XE Enterprise supports multiple databases and has support for building multi-tier applications. RAD Studio XE Enterprise includes everything in the Professional edition, plus:

• Database server support for Interbase, Firebird, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, Informix and Sybase
• FinalBuilder Embarcadero Edition and command line tools for build automation
• Remote server connectivity to Interbase when building .NET applications
• DataSnap for multi-tier application development
• VCL for the Web with no connection limit
• Complete UML support – 2 way modelling capabilities with synchronisation between code and models, multiple diagram types, documentation generation and design patterns

RAD Studio Architect

The most advanced edition of RAD Studio XE, RAD Studio XE Architect is designed for creating data-intensive applications for large databases. RAD Studio XE Architect includes everything in the Professional and Enterprise editions, plus:

• ER/Studio 8.0 Developer Edition – helps to reverse engineer, understand and thus optimise databases. Generate database code from models designed in ER/Studio and create models from information extracted from databases and script files.
