• The 2011 release of C++Builder is called C++Builder XE. The XE branding signifies that a product is part of the Embarcadero family of heterogeneous application and database tools.
• C++Builder XE is based on Embarcadero ToolCloud technology and provides streamlined network licensing options.
• It includes free access to licences for older versions of C++Builder including C++Builder 2010, C++Builder 2009, C++Builder 2007 and C++Builder 6.
• C++Builder XE offers an easy upgrade path to Embarcadero All-Access.

Licensing

What are the different types of licences available?

A named user licence is for one individual and the named user is the only person permitted to use the product. There is no requirement to have a licence server. A network named user requires a licence server and enhances licence manageability when you have multiple users.

A concurrent user licence allows multiple individuals to use the product, but only up to the number of concurrent licenses purchased. Once that limit is exceeded, anyone else trying to access the software is denied access. Concurrent licences require a licence server - you can use either ToolCloud or FLEXnet.

What is ESD, ToolCloud and Flex?

ESD licences ('Electronic Software Download') provide you with an electronic download of the product(s) purchased. These are typically the most common type of licenses purchased.

ToolCloud and FLEX licences are used when you wish to manage your licences over a network. They help maintain a list of named users/concurrent users who can use the product.

What is Support and Maintenance?

Support and Maintenance can be purchased at the time you purchase your product or upgrade. The support and maintenance agreement gives you a year of upgrades (including major and minor upgrades) and a specified number of support incidents.

What are the limitations of the Academic products?

The Academic edition can be used only for learning in an academic or classroom environment. Educational institutions cannot use the academic version to produce software for use within their institution. Additionally most academic products are not eligible for upgrades.

Editions

C++Builder XE is available in 4 separate editions:

C++Builder Starter

C++Builder Starter Edition is a low-cost entry-level edition of C++Builder. It features the Embarcadero C++ Compiler (bcc32), hundreds of included components, a VCL form designer, a full featured debugger and more.

The Starter Editions may be used by individuals until any revenue from sold applications or components exceeds $1,000 USD or by companies with five or fewer employees whose total annual revenue does not exceed $1,000 USD.

C++Builder Professional

C++Builder Professional is a low cost solution for building high performance Windows and touch screen applications with local database support. C++Builder Professional features include:

• Local database support for Interbase and MySQL
• Supports VCL for the Web with a limit of 5 connections
• Visually represent code with UML code visualisation

C++Builder Enterprise

C++Builder Enterprise supports multiple databases and has support for building multi-tier applications. C++Builder Enterprise includes everything in the Professional edition, plus:

• Database server support for Interbase, Firebird, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, Informix and Sybase
• DataSnap for multi-tier application development
• VCL for the Web with no connection limit
• Complete UML support – 2 way modelling capabilities with synchronisation between code and models, multiple diagram types, documentation generation and design patterns.

C++Builder Architect

The most advanced edition of C++Builder, C++Builder Architect is designed for creating data-intensive applications for large databases. C++Builder Architect includes everything in the Professional and Enterprise editions, plus:

• ER/Studio Developer Edition – helps to reverse engineer, understand and thus optimise databases. Generate database code from models designed in ER/Studio and create models from information extracted from databases and script files.
